Rich- this place is so dense in its richness, there is no single cm left uncovered. In painting, in marble, in tile, in sculpture- sometimes layers upon layers- each telling a story about life or beauty or heroism or love or death (my particular favorite). It is so well preserved it seems hardly believable that someone could live here- and that is saying that after visiting some pretty loft German castles and palaces. The Italians know something about life and living.

I would argue that this Caravaggio room- 2 of my favorite paintings above- just so casual in it’s exhibition, is probably one of the jewels of all of Rome. To see these Carvaggios all in one place- the light and the expression and feeling captured is just as dense but in its severity and restraint.

Nestled on top of the hill, with a great view of Rome, I went for 2 walks in the adjacent Borghese Gardens – set away from the bustle of the city below, it is a rare place of respite from the roughness of Rome. I really took my time in this part- nature forming the walls of space in which the light to play its shadows of fun. Wake up early, stay up late- these are the moments I truly love.
