São Paolo: Edificio Torre Paulista

Referred to as “The Slide” I provide here both more history on Paulista Ave and what I would consider a very random website (found as a source from Gemini’s summary) to provide so much information on this building. I cobbled the below together from that site’s original material and the various prompts to Gemini 3.1 Pro (Mar 4, 2026):

  • Completed in 1974, the building was designed by a trio of prominent architects: Jorge Zalszupin (a Polish-Brazilian master of furniture design), José Gugliotta, and José Maria de Moura Pessoa
  • Immediately upon its inauguration in April 1974, the building became a hub for Japanese-Brazilian commerce.
  • Primary Tenant: The Sumitomo Bank established its headquarters here. The building’s design was so closely associated with the bank that it was often colloquially called the “Sumitomo Building.”
  • After the peak of Sumitomo’s residency, the building transitioned into a high-standard corporate office space housing a variety of professional firms.
  • While Avenida Paulista reigned supreme as the financial heart of Brazil for much of the 20th century, Faria Lima began to challenge its dominance in the late 1960s and early 1970s, eventually eclipsing it in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
  • The migration of banks and large corporations to Avenida Faria Lima marked the beginning of the building’s decline. Occupancy rates declined, and its use was limited to occasional activities.
  • In 2019, an announcement rekindled hope for the building’s revitalization. The first São Paulo branch of the Hard Rock Hotel chain would be located at this address, with 230 rooms and an estimated investment of R$100 million. The project was scheduled for completion in 2021. Shortly before the pandemic, the property manager decided not to renew the leases and vacated the building to begin renovations. However, the project never got off the ground. Although the announcement was made, nothing has materialized to date. Everything indicates that the Hard Rock management company underwent changes of direction in Brazil, which led not only to the stagnation of this initiative, but also to the suspension or cancellation of several other ventures planned by the brand in the country.

It all comes down to what I want to know and is that information out there- the LLM comes down to speed but the answers may still not be there.

These few blocks of Avenue Paulista are such a great encapsulation of at least 3 major shifts- from mansions to vertical, from financial hub to not, and finally from pre-COVID to post. Many places in this journey to visit the built world have survived and will survive decades to come, but I believe there is good chance Edificio Torre Paulista may be too late to save and perhaps the next shift will see its demise- the first of these posts to bring forward such an idea.
