Roma Norte is my favorite neighborhood in Mexico City (well, so far). I happened to walk through the area at night on the way from Arena México heading to a show at the highly anticipated Fũnk Club and definitely knew I needed to return. Delights abounded as I got my chance a couple days later – first to be wowed by Helados Cometa (honestly, a moment of pure joy and refreshment after an intensive day of art at Zona Maco) and then just across the street by Casa Basalta.

While these two sets of staircases define the navigation through the space- there’s a collectiveness between all of the different vendors that seems to carry the place. From a sneaker shop, to a meditation studio, to a pizza restaurant, to an art gallery – I felt like it was a place that people living there would actually go and hopefully take advantage of (perhaps just the rich or digital nomads, but still).
An attitude with much creativity and openess to ideas- a freedom to try something out- a freedome to collage together something new. This is what I took away from Casa Basalta- a freshness to match that of which I tasted from across the street. What an abundance of experiences in such a small corner of the world.
