Copenhagen: Copenhill (Reffen)

It is poignant that my last post from this prolific trip to Copenhagen is Copenhill. After my usual round of research, Copenhill was the only building I decided I needed to see on this trip and ironically, it was the least impressive (though still making an impression).

Afar in the skyline. Perspectives matter and it’s all relative. Ingenuity.

I wonder what this area will be like in 15 years. The last time I was in Copenhagen (and sadly I could not make it back this time to the Louisiana Museum) some of the neighborhoods did not even exist. It feels as though entire sections are being built at once- creating communities at a human scale, not at a car scale. So I wonder what the Copenhill are will look and more importantly, feel like. [Will I be alive in 15 years? Some of you can guess the answer.] If anything, Copenhill serves as a true landmark- I was able to spot it from many locations while understanding the skyline of the city.

Getting closer to the building, no longer admiring from afar, I realize I had an idea in my head. I thought Copenhill would be more polished and more of a hang out spot. It turns out that everyone is hanging out in Reffen, not too far away.

Please go to Reffen. The food is amazing!

When traveling with others, there’s less time to spend with oneself thinking and for me, that’s usually accompanied by noise-isolated listening to of music. Walking up those stairs to the top of Copenhill were rare moments without others and I did feel alone. And afraid. I have a fear of falling, not of height, and with the very strong wind- the railing, the structural engineer and gravity were what I had to believe as true.

It’s clever. I wonder what else the Danes will come up with. If humans can figure this out, how to bring a mountainous sport to a flat land, I daresay there might be hope for us.

It is also with a bit of sadness that this is my last post from this visit to Copenhagen. So inspiring and fulfilling it was to see the possibilities, I wish I could have stayed even longer. Will I go back again?
