Copenhagen: Area of IT University of Copenhagen

Good thing I’ve got experience on a bike, thanks to living in Amsterdam, because this whole series of photos was taken with one hand while riding a bike during a ride-by. On the way to the IT University of Copenhagen building, we rode through an entire campus of modern architectural wonders. I say “wonders” because as an American it’s still mind blowing how clear a priority design is for this nation, but for the Danes seems almost expected.

I broke out a separate post for this area that was part of our bike riding around town because there were too many highlights to try to squeeze in. Also, for anyone using this blog to find spaces of inspiration- this particular area is worth calling out on its own.

My immediate reaction to one of the buildings in this campus (left image above) was the similarity to the Zollverein School in Germany (right image above). The massive concrete plane floating above with angled cut outs being the theme here. I’m curious about the construction technique used here- what it must be like to build the framing to pour the concrete at such height. When imagining concrete, it rarely gives the impression of being weightless but rather the opposite of having great density.

But there’s even more cutouts in overhead planes spotted along this part of the ride. For a country that gets a ton of rainfall, one would think that more overhead protection would be ideal, but maybe they prioritize light over shelter.

The Danes are certainly a maritime country no doubt- small and surrounded by water, barely above sea level- and in this part of town there’s some lovely water ways with outdoor spaces furnished with furniture.

There’s actually so much to see in this area I felt that I barely scratched the surface. One could easily ride here, grab a coffee, ride around, walk around, sit by the water with a book and repeat- especially on a long, sunny summer day.
